Taiwan River Accident Database

In Taiwan, between river tracing, canyoning, pack rafting and white water kayaking, likely more than a dozen river trips occur daily. The growing popularity of recreational canyoning, which has a lower barrier to entry and higher risk compared to river tracing, has resulted in an increase in accidents over the past several years. Members of Taiwan’s canyoning community have taken it upon themselves to aggregate all available public reports. The hope is that the openness of this database can cultivate a culture of openness, transparency, and altruism when it comes to systematically documenting and analyze accidents for the good of the community.

Learn from the mistakes of others. Build an understanding of problems that can occur in rivers and discover potential solutions.

The Taiwan River Accident Database currently tracks river accidents reported to the community and includes known river tracing accidents and canyoning accidents going as far back as 2000. Links to incident reports are included where available. Incident reports that are more complete, feature complex scenarios, or are otherwise of interest will be translated and posted on the Mountaineering Blog in the Accident Reports category.
